audio \\ advertisement!!!
[ The folks at Majestic Marketing felt like they hit the jackpot. Lots of companies were interested in advertising to Supers, but outside of broad marketing strategies, no one who wasn't a Displaced Super had automatic access to their network communications. So when Miriam Maisel reported for her first day as a voice actor, they immediately recorded and asked her to blast out her first ad — they moved fast before the new Super could fully understand what was going on.
It helps that when Midge first stepped through that portal, she gained powers without gaining the full knowledge, that she has those powers.
The bet, of course, is that even if Midge figures it out and doesn't want to another targeted ad later, Majestic Marketing will have at least cashed in big for their first-ever ad just for Displaced Supers. And boy did they have a brand who was itching to get the Supers' ears. ]
We get it.
[ The voice you hear is clearly feminine with a touch of sass. And a little pep. ]
You're in a new place. A new Earth, and most of the time, with new powers.
[ The producer gives Miriam a thumbs up. You're doin' great hun. ]
For the first time ever, Chanel is launching its custom line, tailored pieces made just for Supers. Our new fabrics will adapt to a variety of changes, all unique to you.
[ Holding half of the over-ear headphones over her own ears, Midge reads the last few lines in a slightly lower, sexier voice. It's a little too clear that she's having too much fun with it. ]
See what we have to offer at Chanel.com. In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.
[ And cut. ]

And yet, someone's voice was coming from her bracelet.
She lifts her wrist up close to her lips, treating it like a walkie-talkie. ]
Uh ... hello to you too.
[ It's clearly the same voice as was on the ad, but since she's just talking, Miriam's pitch is not quite as high. ]

[ There's a long pause because he doesn't actually expect the advertiser to respond. ]
Hi...? Wait is this an actual post? I thought the network was, like, throwing fucking ads at us now...I was about to start looking for an ad blocker.
no subject
A post? Like a letter, written on paper, that you send in the mail? No no no hon. What you just heard was a radio ad.
[ Somewhere in the background, there's the sound of someone else stifling a laugh. Midge doesn't fully get that it's because of her, so she keeps going. ]
Are you a ... a. ... bracelet operator or something? Is that why you can speak through this thing?
no subject
[ He sounds super confused at that question when he tries to answer it, however after the long pause he takes to make sure he heard her right. ]
Bracelet operator? No, is that a thing? Everybody can speak through this, lady, that's why we all have 'em. Well, all but Alyssa, I think. She ditched hers. Like, it's just a cell phone, you know? Like an iPhone?
[ Something suddenly occurs to him. Richie had been completely lost on how to use GPS on his communicator back in the cities. Here, Steve had shown a little confusion at some of the functionality at first, although he picked it up pretty quick. Maybe she was from the 80s, too. ]
Wait, are you from the 1980s, too? I have a couple of friends from back then that didn't get some of the things you can do with this sort of thing right away. Like, I guess they didn't have stuff like this back then?
[ Caleb wouldn't know. He's had a cell phone since middle school. He and his sister used to have iPods and sometimes, their dad would let them play with the iPad he kept mostly for work. The Internet has always been a thing. Caleb was still a baby when 9/11 happened. None of the tech here is new to him at all and he's always had some sort of access to it for his whole life. It could've been invented in 2000 or 1991 or something; he'd never know it. It never occurred to him to care enough to look it up. ]
no subject
The next words though, just make her silent for a moment as she shakes her head. Cell phone? iPhone? Good thing he actually starts saying something else, and when that question about the 1980s comes up, Midge let's out a breath she didn't know she'd been holding. ]
Oh boy.
[ Mmmmmha. ]
Ohhhhh boy.
[ Now the looks she's been getting are starting to make a teensy weensy bit of sense. ]
The 19-sixties kid. [ A beat, before Midge has clearly taken a brief interlude to talk to someone else: You, yeah you, the blonde. You could've said something you know. ] I know that they try to explain the fact that we're on some different plant in a different future, but honestly, most of what you just said to me doesn't make any sense.
no subject
[ If he sounds awestruck, that's because he very, very much is. That's practically unfathomable to him, that's a million damn years ago! ]
That's...[ He huffs a little laugh. ] Uh, that's probably because back home for me, it was 2018. No wonder nothing I said made any sense.
no subject
Two thousand eighteen?
That's.
Insane.
No, really.
[ She's been given enough orientation to know that the people here are also from the "future" but it's their present, and Midge expects to go home and not be an inventor, so she hasn't exactly paid a ton of attention. Someone else who's stuck here being from the future though? That's way more exciting. ]
What's life like in the future? Tell me the really mundane stuff — whatever seems really obvious and boring to you.
no subject
Yeah, that you're from like forty years before I was even born is blowing my fuckin' mind, too, right now.
[ He barks out a little laugh. ]
Lady, I wouldn't even know where to start! You gotta be more specific. Like what kind of mundane stuff? Like this bracelet thing, you know the projection it puts on your arm? That's basically just what our phones look like when I came from. I mean, not on our arms; on an actual device that looks like...uh, like kinda a tiny computer?
[ When did computers get invented, anyway? He has no idea. ]
What's the past like? Do you know any hippies? Are you a hippie?!
audio;
Oh, good. I'm so glad they've found a way to utilize the Supers network to advertise directly to us. You know, just in case we weren't inundated enough with the advertising everywhere on general access television, billboards, radio, newspapers, magazines, social media, benches, public transportation, and God knows where else that I'm forgetting about. Wouldn't want us to miss out on direct marketing for a bunch of bullshit we don't fucking need.

You sound as jaded as my son Ethan, and he's only five.
no subject
[ His tone is dry and flat, like it usually is. He knows how he sounds, but sometimes he forgets that it's not normal for most people to hear a child while they're talking to an old man, so he makes no mention of his age if it doesn't come up. It hasn't come up, yet, in this particular conversation. ]
How did you get on this network? Are you one of us? If you're one of us, I think that might actually be even worse.
audio:
Well, hello.

Instead, out of all her responses so far, this guy sounds ... well, like how guys normally sound when they talk to Midge in-person. ]
Hello yourself.
[ The sound of her voice is just a touch on the flirty side. ]
I'm Miriam. Who's this?
audio ongoing
My name's Steve.
Chanel. As in the perfume?
no subject
That's right. At least, where I'm from, they certainly did make perfume. And bags. And a lot of jewelry. I'm guessing it's the same company in this place too.
no subject
You've got a great voice for this. Chanel's going to get a definite boost in popularity.
video;
Mate, we're already different. This was good, though, you almost had me thinking there was an actual ad on the network.
video ongoing
When the Australian girl's video feed shows up on her wrist, it's by pure luck that Midge taps the green button hologram instead of the red one. Because who in the world has seen those weird icons on those buttons before?
For all intents and purposes, Midge's background looks like a marketing studio. ]
Oh honey, believe me, I'm pretty sure that was an ad. Otherwise, I don't think they're gonna pay me today, and I'd rather not lose a job on my first day here. [ Midge's expression looks like she's exaggerating though, just a little bit. ]
no subject
[ Rikki looks slightly taken aback and caught between impressed and offended at the idea. How the heck was a local getting on the Supers network to advertise for Chanel? She did just say first day, though. Maybe it's just her first day at a new job. ]
no subject
Or that we'd want superhero gear.
I mean you don't see any of us running around with a mask being vigilantes.
[ You know, except Diego. ]
voice?
Well sir, for all I know, you're wearing a mask right now.
voice!
[ There’s a grin in his voice. ]
👍🏼
Maybe it's aspirational. If I had superpowers, I'd want something a little more functional to use them in. [ A beat. ] Though, I guess that depends on the superpower. [ Hm. Midge makes a mental note that this? This might be something she could turn into a great bit for the future. ]
Voice;
[ Casey might very well be the only person in this post who is actually interested in product, for all she knows. She is interested, that much is true, but mostly she's looking for something she can turn into a new uniform. She doesn't have the Supergirl one here, but even if she did, it looks so much like her dad's that it feels like she'd be calling too much attention to herself. If this special line is actually functional rather than just expensive and pretty, Chanel might have themselves a new regular customer. ]

Hi there! I uh, know some, but if you ask something I don't know, I can help direct you to whoever would know. Fire away.
[ Because as Susie's taught her — if you have to start again from ground zero, you might as well do a good job. Maybe the marketing company will see this as a good thing. Plus, Midge has always been on the side of more fashion. ]
no subject
Okay, do you know what fabrics they're made of? The line aimed at Supers?
no subject
Ahhhhh...well... no, I don't, sorry hon. Though, I do know that they have at least three kinds they're working on. I overheard someone talking about how that was originally in the script, but they took it out. I think they're trying to tailor the cuts and fabrics to individual people's needs.

Kudos to you and your agent, they picked the right person for this kind of job.
[ Thinly veiled compliment? You bet. ]
