It happened again...only this time I saw you with a cast and picking up medications - that girl wasn't very nice to you - and then you standing up to your mother about the medications.

[Prim, at least, sounds much better than she did when she saw Eddie's death, when her death was out there for everyone. In fact, she's a little bit proud of her friend even if it's years later.]

You really are brave, it's not easy to stand up to people we love. Especially when they think they're protecting us, whether they're right or not.

Gretta Keene? She was always a bitch, but she was the only one who ever bothered to tell me that I didn't actually need any of that shit. Too bad she was about thirteen years too late.

[ He gives her a small smile that falls short of his eyes. ]

Well, don'to go being too proud of me, kiddo. It didn't last long.

I guess sometimes someone we might not like can see things more clearly than we can, but still.

[She shrugs, offering a small, not quite full-bright smile back.]

Baby steps are better than nothing. It's not easy. My sister, even though I went through medic training still thought I was a baby who couldn't braid my own hair and that she had to protect. Any little movement forward is better than nothing.

Yeah. I doubt she did that out of the goodness of her heart to help me out, but... I just wish I'd remembered it after I left Derry. I forgot everything. Everything. Until I went back, anyway.

[ He gives her a small smile. ]

I bet she didn't actually think you were a baby who couldn't do it. I bet she just didn't want to give up doing it for you and she didn't like thinking about you as anything other than her baby sister.

It's sad that you couldn't remember it afterward, but that wasn't your fault. If things had been different you might have been.

[Even if it hadn't been easy for him, Prim believes in Eddie, honestly.]

Maybe so - I know that she had trouble realizing that I had grown up while she was away. She missed things that I think she didn't want to, that made it harder too, maybe.

If things had been different, I definitely would've remembered that terrifying summer in all of its awfulness as well as the good times we had. It wasn't all bad.

My life would've been a lot different, I think, if I hadn't forgotten it all when we moved away.

[ He sighs and shrugs. It is what it is, though. Can't change the past. ]

Yeah, I would think it would've made it harder. I'm betting that's all it is. She wasn't ready to let go of you being her baby sister but that doesn't mean she actually thinks you're a baby. I'm sure she doesn't.
